-
- Many external SCSI drives for the Mac do not have a Drive-In-
- Use indicator light. Most MS-DOS PC's have a front panel LED
- that shows drive activity. My Jasmine Direct Drive 20 lacked
- such an LED and I decided to add one. The drive is so quite
- that at times it was hard to tell if the drive was in use or
- if the Mac had crashed into an endless loop. I then decided
- to install a Drive-In-Use light {hence forth called an LED
- for light-emitting diode} on the front of my Jasmine SCSI
- case.
-
- Parts needed:
-
- RADIO SHACK 276-041 Red LED's $ .69
- RADIO SHACK 276-079 LED Holders $ .59
- 12" red wire 22 ga
- 12" black wire 22 ga
- Plastic Electrical tape
- solder
-
- Tools needed:
-
- Screwdriver cross tip & flat tip
- Soldering iron 10 watts max
- wire cutters
- Electric drill
- 1/4" drill bit
-
- Time needed: About 30 minutes
-
- Disconnect all power and interface cables to the hard drive.
- Ground yourself to discharge any static electricity that you
- might have.
-
- Open up your hard drive. Most hard drives have a jumper
- connector for the LED. Some have the LED solder directly to
- the host board. The Jasmine used a Mini-Scribe that had the
- LED mounted on a 5.25" front panel. I simply cut the wires
- to the LED on the 5.25" front panel and soldered in my red
- and black wires. You may need to contact the drive
- manufacturer to find out where to connect the LED.
-
- Solder the red wire to the cathode (-) side of the LED. If
- you are not sure which wire is negative, wrap the wires
- around the led to test it before you solder. If the LED
- doesn't come on when you power on the drive, reverse the
- wires and retest. If the LED still doesn't work, contact the
- drive manufacturer for help.
-
- Once you have connected the LED and it lights up when you
- turn on the power to the drive, wrap all solder joints with
- electrical tape to prevent a short.
-
- Locate a suitable location on the drive case (I put mine
- right above the Jasmine logo on the left side) and drill a
- 1/4" hole in the case. Make sure you clean out all of the
- drill shavings!! Bits of metal can cause your drive to
- fail!. Insert the LED holder from the outside and insert the
- LED from the inside. Re-test the LED again. Once everything
- works, reassemble your drive being careful to make sure that
- the extra wire from the LED doesn't get in the way of
- anything inside the drive case.
-
- You now can verify when your drive is in use by looking at
- the LED on the front of your drive. This simple modification
- makes life a bit easier when using a hard drive.
-
-
- Note:
-
- I installed my LED Feb 5th, 1990. It has worked for over a year
- without any problems.
